The goals of modern drug discovery and development efforts are to bring forward new chemical entities that effectively impact human health in a beneficial way. The last decade has provided an unprecedented wealth of information on the “parts list” of the human organism, yet the functional wiring diagram for physiological and pathophysiological states is in rudimentary form. The molecular and functional advances made recently have led to significant insights, and ion channels represent an important class of drug targets. They serve as important models for understanding simple and complex multi-gene human disease syndromes. Understanding their complexity and diversity will lead to novel human therapeutics and a better understanding of human diseases.
